Today I headed down to IKEA to pick up some fabrics for sewing since I had checked out IKEA’s online store in Dubai and they had a special section for fabrics.
I picked up a deep purple velvet fabric ( 1 yard) , the GULLVI multicoloured fabric( 1 and a half yard) which actually was designed and created by fashion students in Sweden and I also picked up a multicoloured flower patterned fabric ( 1 yard)
What I planned to do with these fabrics was that the velvet would be used for a circle skirt, the GULLIVI fabric for a jacket or a dress and the multicoloured flower pattern for a pair of shorts.
For today I decided to give the shorts a try because I did hear that shorts were quite easy to sew. Since I did not have a pre cut pattern to use, I searched up how to sew shorts on the internet and I found a lovely blog to help me out called Maycie After Five. The DIY was called How to Make shorts and so I followed the instructions.
The instructions were very easy to understand and I got the right measurements this time and cut out the right pattern. I also managed to sew all my hemlines straight but I did opt out of putting in elastic just to see how it feels and looks. My only problem when sewing these shorts was sewing the crotch area and as far as I have discussed with people who have sewed shorts, the crotch part is always the hardest and there is not really a specific reason as to why but most of the times it is the only part that doesn’t fit perfectly. Mine was quite good considering I am a rookie but I can make it better so if I do get the time I will try to fix it properly.
