Today was my last lesson at Craftland for the pattern projects course for 5 days and I was excited to finish off my bag and skirt but sad that I could no longer attend anymore classes as these were the last of summer classes they had organized and I would be too busy because of school.
I continued on with making my bag and there was only one part to do and that was to finish off the top hem. I folded the top fabric of about half an inch and sewed it with a straight stich and my bag was complete. The only problem I faced was just getting the right measurements for the fabric and at times I felt nervous that I was not sewing straight but I did manage to sew all my lines straight and Mrs.Stephanie said that I had done a very good job.
She then proceeded to teach me about handsewing and she said that I might prefer to use a simple technique. What I did was, first I took my skirt in which my top hem had already been sewed but I needed to handsew it to secure it and I took a hand sewing needle and made a double knot with the thread. I then took the needle and pushed it down towards the fabric to wherever I needed my sewing point to be. Next I pushed the needle back upwards exactly from the point I first pushed my needle downwards and at the top of the hem was a tiny stich and this went on until I finished the whole hem. I did have some difficulties at the beginning when I did not push the needle back from its same position which made my stiches end up somewhere else but Mrs.Stephanie helped me out with that and showed an example of how to do it properly.
Overall the whole course was very educational and I picked up new skills on how to sew and I learnt how to pattern cut which is very important to know in terms of sewing today since a lot of clothing is usually pattern cut and then sewed and I also learnt how dress makers pick out sizes and how crucial it is to get the right size.
