Today’s lesson was the last day of my three day course at Craftland in which I was learning the basics of sewing.
From the previous lesson I had a problem with getting the elastic through the whole fabric so I continued on with that today. Ms. Maria helped me out and told me that why I could not get it through properly was because I was tugging on the fabric itself rather than on the safety pin attached to the elastic. Once she told me that, I tugged the safety pin and the whole process became so much easier within minutes. It is quite fascinating how a little bit of advice makes something so hard seem so easy.
Once I had gotten the elastic through the fabric, I closed it up by sewing the two ends of the fabric and my mini elastic skirt was done!
Next, Mrs.Maria told us that we would be learning how to sew a zipper. Zippers are very useful in clothing as they can make actually putting on something onto your body much easier and they look sophisticated and stylish.
For this project I required one 5 x 5 piece of fabric and one 14cm zipper. Before sewing a zipper with the sewing machine, it has to be noted that you cannot under any circumstances sew a zipper with a normal presser foot in your machine. You have to use a zipper foot or otherwise your machine will encounter some problems while sewing and your zipper will be ruined.
Hence I changed my zipper to a zipper foot which was invisible meaning it was clear and I placed my fabric underneath the foot and placed one of the zipper’s right side aligned to my fabric and presser foot. Next, I sewed the zipper onto the fabric using a straight stich and I made sure not to sew onto the zipper teeth itself because it could potentially damage my zipper and the machine.
Soon, Ms.Maria told us that the lesson had ended and after packing up I stayed back to ask about what classes I should take next and what machine I should buy.
Ms.Maria told me that I should consider taking the class of sewing a summer dress but when I talked to the teacher of that course she said that sewing a dress is quite complicated and as a beginner the duration of the class would not be enough for me to finish it so I asked her what other option I could take and she told me consider taking the pattern projects class where I could either sew a skirt or blouse. I ended up choosing to do a skirt because I felt that learning the basic first would be easier and I have always wanted to learn how to sew a skirt since I do not own that many. I also asked her what machine I should buy and she told me that I should buy whichever machine I felt most comfortable working with. The only machine I had used was the Brother Innov-ís 50 sewing machine but I did want to check out other machines and price really mattered to me because I did not want to buy a very expensive machine since I am just a beginner.
